Wesley DuBose is a Product Manager at OpenSpace. Before making the move into technology, he worked across several roles in construction. He started out supporting a superintendent in the field, worked with estimating and project management teams, and was most recently a project manager for a large mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contractor in Texas.

The complexity of getting construction right

We recently sat down with Wesley to hear how his experience in the field informed how he thinks about construction technology today. In this video, he shares why the complexity of construction demands better tools—and how AI is changing what’s possible for construction teams.

Construction leaves little room for getting things wrong. Teams are challenged with coordinating people, schedules, physical materials, and lead times, all while making sure the right resources are in the right place at the right time.

“There’s no redoing things in construction in a way that’s cost-effective. You have to be right the first time.”

When technology doesn’t keep up with the work

Wesley describes construction as an industry that builds and sustains the physical environments society depends on. He stresses that the complexity of the work has often outpaced the tools available to the people delivering it.

He experienced this firsthand. Even routine processes like document control could require hours of manual work just to make sure teams had access to the same information.

He knew there had to be a better way.

From construction to building technology for builders

Wesley’s frustration with those processes didn’t make him want to leave construction behind. He loves the industry and wanted to focus on solving problems for the people building projects every day.

That motivation ultimately led him to construction technology and OpenSpace.

Having faced many of the same challenges as OpenSpace customers, Wesley understands the problems they’re trying to solve because he’s been in their shoes himself.

How AI is changing construction workflows

Wesley is particularly excited about the changes AI and agentic workflows can deliver. Tasks that require hours of manual work can be completed in minutes, giving construction teams significant time back on the job.

His main bit of advice to the construction industry: stay close to what’s happening in construction technology and technology more broadly. The people adopting these tools have an opportunity to become technology leaders within their companies and help shape where the industry goes next.

Building better tools for builders

For Wesley, that’s ultimately what better construction technology is about: giving builders tools that match the complexity of the work they’re being asked to deliver.
